The Michigan State International Law Review will be hosting an annual symposium February 21 -22, 2013.
Call for Papers
BATTLE FOR THE NORTH: THE NEXT GREAT CONFLICT is intended to be a broad topic, covering a variety of topics relating to international law and the Artic region. Possible areas of exploration for papers and panels include:
Proposals for additional topics are welcome. Presenters’ papers will be given preferential consideration for the annual Michigan State International Law Review Symposium Issue, anticipated publication date November/December 2013.
• THE LAW OF THE SEA. • TERRITORIAL CLAIMS AND BORDER DISPUTES; • OIL, GAS, AND MINERALS: exploration, exploitation, and transportation; • THE REGULATION, GOVERNANCE, AND MANAGEMENT OF ARCTIC LANDS AND RESOURCES: the balance between protecting and commercializing fresh water, fish, marine mammals, and plants of the region; • ENVIRONMENTAL LAW: climate change and its impact on the environment and the security of the region; • INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN THE ARCTIC REGION: protecting their subsistence rights, cultural and traditional knowledge, and self-governance in a changing environment; • NATIONS WITH ARCTIC TERRITORIES: understanding national interests, security concerns, and alliances; • THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS AND TRADE LAW
