Academic Coordinator

General Summary

Responsible for providing program-wide support for undergraduate and graduate student affairs in the American Indian Studies Inter-departmental Program (AIS-IDP) including: supporting chair and faculty in the academic instructional program; curricular initiatives, and ongoing assessment of student learning outcomes. The position is responsible for academic advising and will work in collaboration with the Retention of American Indians Now (RAIN) project on the retention efforts for American Indian undergraduate and graduate students.

The Academic Coordinator will seek new ways to strengthen and coordinate campus/community partnerships in support of American Indian students and develop new strategies that respond to the ongoing needs of students.

Reporting to the Chair of the AIS-IDP, the Academic Coordinator oversees and implements a variety of academic and student support initiatives. In addition, the Academic Coordinator will meet regularly with the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Advising, the Director of the American Indian Studies Center, and the Associate Vice Provost for Student Diversity.  In addition, the Academic Coordinator will meet regularly with American Indian Student Association (AISA), RAIN, American Indian Recruitment (AIR), and with the UCLA American Indian Undergraduate Task Force.

The duties of the Coordinator include, but are not limited to, the following:

Academic Programs

  • Provide academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in AIS programs
  • Develop and implement an ongoing retention program in partnership with AIS faculty, American Indian Studies Center, American Indian Graduate Student Association (AIGSA) Academic Advancement Program (AAP), RAIN,  Center for Community College Partnerships (CCCP),  and Student Affairs
  • Work closely with the AIS-IDP  faculty in the development, review and evaluation of academic plans, curriculum, programs and course schedules
  • Provide support to AIS-IDP Chair and faculty in course planning and implementation
  • Collaborate with undergraduate students in the development and implementation of a Fiat Lux course

Program Development and Expansion

  • Work with the AIS-IDP faculty and students to implement curricula and courses relevant to the American Indian Studies Program
  • Research and develop program directions, especially for and with undergraduate students
  • Work closely with AIS-IDP Chair and provide support to the Faculty Advisory Committee
  • Communicate, liaison, and create a relationship with AISA and other programs serving American Indian students and actively support student  events

Strategic Planning and Campus-wide Partnerships

  • Collaborates with the Director of the American Indian Studies Center and Task Force as part of campus based leadership team
  • In collaboration with the AIR project and the Recruitment/Liaison position,  partners with the Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions and Relations with Schools staff  in the recruitment of American Indian students
  • Work closely with colleagues in RAIN, CCCP, AAP, College Academic Counseling, and Student Affairs in the transition and support of students (graduate and undergraduate) including orientation, financial aid, housing,  advising and involvement
  • Partner with colleagues in the Center for Student Programming  and the Community Programs Office’s  AIS Student projects, RAIN and AIR
  • Participate and collaborate with Task Force in community outreach programs as well as Los Angeles area, state, regional and national outreach efforts
  • In collaboration with AISA’s projects, RAIN and AIR,  develop and submit proposals for funding retention and scholarship programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
