From the Washington Post coverage:
OKLAHOMA CITY — In a close election that ran overnight, the Cherokee Nation elected a new principal chief Sunday, with final results posted on the tribe’s website showing longtime councilman Bill John Baker defeating three-term incumbent Chad Smith by 11 votes.
More than 15,000 votes were cast, and the margin between the men had been fewer than 30 since late Saturday.
I hope this ends the spoon feeding of the displaced cherokees. Namely Inland Cherokees Riverside California, Marysville Cherokees. This is supposed to part of the Corbel decision. Maybe we can have a powerful force of Cherokees in Congress as there was in 1820 before Andrew Jackson defied the United States Supreme Court. Yes, it has been that long. We at Indian Country and indian Voices would like to see articles on how the new administration will create a NATIONAL FORCE of Cherokees. I guess that was the eventual idea of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in moving them without permission. Now that would be real Native American news and would certainly stop a lot of Republican and Tea party designs.
