I read much about many issues. Everyone both Indian and Non Indian know well the contributions that Native American Veterans have made in defense of this nation. Everyone knows that the code talkers saved this country. Everyone knows Native Americans served in greater numbers than any other etnic group in this nations history.
Very few know that the SSCRA of 1940 ,a law enacted to protect all servicemen away from their homes, prohibited states from deducting state income tax from reservation/trust land Indians while they were away fighting wars in distant lands.
Very few know that states ignored this law and deducted state income taxes from the military pay of these Native American Veterans until another law passed in 2001.
The number of Veterans improperlty taxed must be in the hundreds of thousands and the amounts taken must be Staggering for the government to continue to ignore this issue.
I did not see any mention of veterans by the Interior secretary to the Senate committee on Indian affairs.

Nor will you see a reply from politicians. they give only if they get something out of it. land taken away from us wasn’t enough. The current politicians didn’t get a piece of it, so their out for more & whatever they can get.
