Virginia Tribes & Federal Recognition

Indianz.com is reporting that Sen. Jim Webb backs the bill that would provide federal recognition to six Virginia tribes: “H.R.1294 recognizes the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Nation and the Monacan Nation. The bill overwhelmingly passed the House in May.”

Jim Webb’s letter to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is here.

other Federal Recognized tribes in some cases these Tribes or nations

I have a blog which has been tracking the struggle of the Virginia tribes. I first started tracking this issue as a capstone project for a legal class. I have since developed the blog to help me communicate with all parties concerned and I have just published an article in the August 2008 issue of NALA magzine on this issue.
