Tribal elections too close to call

BARAGA — Unofficial results from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s Tribal Council elections held Saturday show a close race, especially for the two seats in the Baraga District.

For the two open seats on the council for the Baraga district, Elizabeth Mayo received 191 votes while challengers Charles Loonsfoot Sr. and Fred Dakota each received 190 votes. Incumbent Gary Loonsfoot Sr. received 176 votes, James Loonsfoot received 59 votes and Debra Williamson received 45 votes.

For the two L’Anse district seats on the council, incumbents Michael LaFernier Sr. and Toni Minton remain on the council with 225 votes and 202 votes, respectively. Jo Anne Racette received 189 votes, Joe Dowd received 166 votes and Donald Stolp received 62 votes.

Associate Tribal Court Judge Violet Friisvall-Ayres received 363 votes. Friisvall-Ayres, an incumbent, ran unopposed.

A proposal to support a primary election prior to the general election passed by a vote of 286 in favor, 184 opposed.

An election board official said a recount of all ballots was being held this morning which would extend into this afternoon.

Voting percentages were not available by press time.
