From the T.C. Record Eagle:

It was the moment Dwaun Anderson has been waiting for.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo called and the Suttons Bay standout answered.

Anderson traveled to Michigan State on Wednesday and was offered a basketball scholarship to join the Class of 2011.

“This is it,” Anderson said. “We got there, got a tour and watched a couple of videos in the conference room.”

When Izzo offered Anderson a scholarship, he didn’t hesitate. He talked to his family for about 10 minutes and then verbally committed.

“I had no doubts at all,” Anderson said. “This is it. I watched a lot of college basketball when I was younger, but I always thought they were the one I liked the most.”

Anderson had previous offers from Central Michigan, Oakland and Utah, but was being patient waiting to see if he could get an offer out of East Lansing.

“I was comfortable waiting because I still had another year,” he said.

Only a junior, Anderson has been named a Class C All-Stater twice.

This season, the 6-foot-3 Anderson led Suttons Bay to a 25-2 record and a run to the Class C state title game at Michigan State’s Breslin Center. He averaged 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks a game.

“This is a thrill for our program and a great thing for Dwaun and his family,” Suttons Bay coach Todd Hursey said. “He’s worked so hard to get to this point. He’s got a lot of hard work in front of him now, but he’s ready for the challenge.”

Anderson agreed.

“I’ve got to work on my ball handling and my shooting,” he said.

Anderson joins Detroit Southeastern guard Brandan Kearney as verbal commits for Michigan State’s Class of 2011. Izzo can’t comment on verbal commits until they sign their national letter of intent this fall.

“With players graduating, he’s going to have an opportunity to play as a freshman,” Hursey said. “He’s got to get to work.”

Anderson has shown a work ethic over his high school career.

A year ago, he worked on improving his defense. Anderson’s also put in work in the classroom, making the Honor Roll last semester and scoring a 20 on the ACT.

“That helped a lot and made a big difference in their decision,” Anderson said of his improvements in the classroom.

Hursey said Anderson believes Michigan State is a place he can succeed academically. He hasn’t decided on a major, but is considering business.

Izzo first came to Suttons Bay in September to look at Anderson. He then returned in April to tell Anderson they were serious about him.

It was only after that second visit that Anderson started to believe he might get an offer from the Spartans.

Anderson will continue to play AAU basketball this spring with the Michigan Mustangs and will look to return Suttons Bay to the Breslin Center next winter.

For his trip on Wednesday, Anderson was joined by his aunt Nicole, his uncle Ron, cousin Veronica, one of his close friends and Hursey.

Before the entourage headed back to Suttons Bay, Hursey said Anderson wanted to stop at a sporting goods store to buy a Green and White T-shirt to wear to school today.

They’re colors he’s going to be wearing for a long time to come.
