The College of Law Indigenous Law & Policy Center (ILPC) welcomes candidates who have a passion for working in a context dedicated to indigenous rights advocacy; experience working with indigenous peoples and diverse groups of people; strong communication, event-planning, and organizational skills; and who exhibit a high degree of professionalism and the ability to work in a self-directed environment or in a group setting.
In addition to the Communications Coordinator, the ILPC also includes a Director and Legal Counselor. Center staff work closely to support pathway to law programs, recruit students, provide services to students, provide teaching and learning opportunities related to Indigenous law, produce original research and scholarship on Indigenous law, and host educational events for MSU Law and other public audiences including members of Tribal communities. MSU College of Law is also home to an Indian Law clinic that coordinates in some areas with the ILPC.
The Communications Coordinator assists the ILPC team by providing administrative support. In collaboration with the College of Law Director of Events and the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Communications Coordinator supports the ILPC by planning events and managing ILPC internal and external communications for students, prospective students, alumni, scholars, Indian law practitioners, Tribal leaders, members of Tribal communities, the broader Law College, and MSU communities.

In 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative. This initiative, which includes gathering records from the boarding school era, and compiling an official list of boarding school sites, makes visible on a national scale the intergenerational impact federal Indian board schools have had on tribal communities. Currently, there are five schools in the state of Michigan that were identified from the federal investigation process (Holy Childhood Boarding School, Baraga Chippewa Boarding and Day School (Holy Name), Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, Mackinac Mission School, and Catholic Otchippewa Boarding School). This is not an extensive list of all the other entities, schools, and programs that operated in Michigan through the Indian Civilization Act of 1819.
The Native Justice Coalition’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was launched in July 2022. It seeks to expand its reach to strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in an effort to seek the truth behind the Indian boarding school policies and corresponding actions taken by the government and church. Through this work, the NJC provides safe, supportive, and culturally competent spaces that offer opportunities for healing and uniting our Native communities on this journey. Our goals are to create an Indigenous-led process that is grounded in mutual respect, culturally sensitive, and focused on meeting clearly defined, jointly agreed upon metrics. Our key four priorities are truth and reconciliation, healing our people and our communities, strengthening ICWA and ensuring a cultural identity for our children, and building a strong ecosystem through investment in the Native Justice Coalition.
Without support from community partners such as the Indigenous Law & Policy Center, Native American Institute, and American Indian and Indigenous Studies at Michigan State University, this work would not be possible. This one-day symposium honors that work on a local scale, providing Michigan State University, and the greater Lansing community an opportunity to learn about the intergenerational trauma caused by federal Indian boarding school policies. Attendees will hear first-hand accounts from boarding school survivors and others who can provide the legal, social, and historical context of the Indian boarding schools. By joining together in community to share stories and voices, the symposium provides a space for knowledge and healing.

Reviews citations, arrest sheets and other law enforcement documents and reports; interviews witnesses, gathers facts and data; determines if sufficient evidence exists to support the charges; conducts legal research; drafts complaints, motions and/or other legal proceedings; prepares a legal strategy; gathers and compiles evidence; identifies and subpoenas witnesses, records and other information required to present the case. Prepares and presents criminal and civil cases in the Navajo Nation and appellate courts; prepares legal memoranda, briefs, motions and other required documents for court presentation; collaborates with law enforcement agencies; and negotiates settlement with opposing parties. Under the general direction of the Chief Justice or his/her designee, provides a variety of legal advice, counseling, research and related legal services in support of the overall judicial operation of the Navajo Nation Judicial Branch; develops and implements improved court processes and supports courts in their use; provides legal advice, research and drafting documents for court operations; performs related duties as assigned. Serves as attorney advisor for court operations, specifically on the development of court rules, forms and standards throughout the Judicial Branch; focuses on development of case management policies and procedures to effectively provide excellent services to court customers; performs analysis and assessment of court operations and case management process; develops procedures and policies to ensure consistent, best practices in the courts; prepares and transmits to the Judicial Conference and the Supreme Court statistical data and reports regarding case management and court operations; serves as the court attorney advisor in conjunction with staff attorneys to provide legal counsel and advice. Provide administrative support, recruit, orientate, train and mentor peacemakers; Recommend and guide individuals and families with follow-up services; Provide guidance in traditional Navajo healing approaches incorporating both Western, faith-based and Navajo traditional philosophies; Implement the Peacemaking Program’s traditional curriculum to provide services to youth, adults, families to restore harmony; Attend trainings and conferences pursuant to established training plans; Randomly monitor and promote the effectiveness and efficiency of peacemakers; Assist with written agreements and narratives; Interview individuals to obtain and verify required case documents and other information; Performs intake process for individuals or as ordered by the court; Completes and/or serves notice of peacemaking sessions; Maintains case management of case files, implements, updates and distributes progress reports; Enters and retrieves case information using automated database or manual logs; Schedules peacemaking sessions and records events as they occur; Shall maintain confidentiality in regards to client information and records at all times.
