STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Little River Band of Ottawa Indians

Legal Intern(s), Manistee, MI. Intern(s) will work closely with the Unified Legal Department in several clearly defined projects to be completed. Interns will assist the Unified Legal Department in its role as in-house legal counsel to the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. The Unified Legal Department provides legal services and representation to the Tribal Government and its Enterprises, including Elected Officials, Departments, Commissions, and the Little River Casino Resort. Seeking a part time associate judge to preside over the civil dockets, which includes general civil matters and family law cases.  The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation is a small rural community located approximately 25 miles south of Olympia, Washington.  This is a contractual position for 2 to 3 court days per month. The Snoquamie Indian Tribe

RFP, Snoqualmie, WA. requests proposals from individual attorneys and law firms interested in serving as Defense Attorney on a part-time, contractual basis, for a three-year term beginning no later than 30 days after contract execution. The Tribe plans to fill at least two Defense Attorney positions pursuant to this RFP. The Defense Attorney will represent parents in Indian Child Welfare cases and defendants in criminal cases in the Snoqualmie Tribal Court (“Court”), as assigned. Currently, Indian Child Welfare cases constitute the bulk of the case load. The Tribe anticipates that the workload will require, on average, approximately 5-20 hours of legal services per month, although this could vary depending on the number and nature of cases being handled at any given time. Nevada Legal Services

Indian Law Program Staff Attorney, Elko, NV.  Nevada Legal Services is a statewide non-profit that provides free legal assistance to low income Nevadans. The Indian Law Program is based out of our Reno office and serves the 27 Native American tribes and colonies within the State of Nevada. The Program provides a wide range of services to both tribal members and tribal governments based upon the needs expressed by each community. In that capacity, the Program acts as public defender in a number of tribal jurisdictions and also serves as counsel to the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada. Frequent travel throughout Nevada, including overnight stays, is required.

Northwest Justice Project

The Skagit Justice Project is a collaboration between NJP and Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (SDVSAS) in an innovative program to provide legal services and advocacy to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking throughout Skagit County. Provide outreach, legal representation, and collaboration with DVSAS and community agencies to improve victim services to underserved Skagit County communities, including immigrants, tribal members, migrant workers and isolated rural residents. Work closely with a DVSAS legal advocate and community groups to lower challenges to access such as language barriers and lack of information about legal rights.
