Saginaw Chippewa Tribe inspects Flint site where bones were found

FLINT — Members of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe were in Flint today inspecting land that is believed to be an Indian burial site.
Earlier this week, construction crews dug up several bones on Stone Street and Third Avenue, which officials now believe could belong to as many as five people. An anthropologist determined the bones are from Native American people and pre-date the 20th century.
Tribe members plan on working with local officials, anthropologists and Saylor Building Company, which was the general contractor working on the site where the remains were found. The tribe members include those from the Ziibiwing Center, which is a cultural center and museum run by the tribe.
Center director Shannon Martin said they will determine if the remains are from Saginaw Chippewa members and may attempt to search the area for more remains.
The group also will work to make sure the skeletal remains receive a proper burial.
