Why are school boards so dumb? It was no different when I graduated from high school in rural upstate NY. They would not let kid march in witht he class because he was growing a beard at age 18. He would then have to shave it soon, since he was off to the Marines and then surely Viet Nam right after school. Old enough to fight and die for your country but not to wear a beard!

Cases like this one make you wonder whether the people who run the school board are operating with a full deck. How much taxpayer money did they waste fighting this? Why not negotiate it out and let the student — ok it ws 10% of the whole class — wear something special for his special day?

I am not sure where there legal issues are here, since we know school boards have great power, but it seems to me this is sort of like Tinker v. Des Moines schools and so the decision is also wrong, but I would want more time to think that one through.
