Description: Lawyers in the Office of Legal Counsel serve as the Governor’s attorneys, providing analysis and advice on all legal and policy issues that involve the Governor.  This includes a wide array of functions, including interpreting federal and state laws, advising the Governor and senior staff on legislation that may impact the powers and authorities of the Governor and the Governor’s office, and serving as the Governor’s lead advocate on litigation involving the Governor’s office and state agencies.

Law Clerks may assist attorneys in the Office of Legal Counsel with the following:

• Reviewing major litigation;
• Monitoring, researching, and drafting legislation;
• Researching and drafting Executive Orders and Executive Directives;
• Reviewing and advising on extradition, clemency, and other criminal matters and ethics issues; and
• Representing and advising the Governor in tribal-state relations

 

Candidates who have completed their first or second year of law school will be selected based on the following criteria:

• Exceptional legal research, writing, and communication skills;
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and
• Ability to respond to a variety of legal issues that arise daily, requiring quick research, analysis, and response

The Snoquamie Indian Tribe

RFP, Snoqualmie, WA. requests proposals from individual attorneys and law firms interested in serving as Defense Attorney on a part-time, contractual basis, for a three-year term beginning no later than 30 days after contract execution. The Tribe plans to fill at least two Defense Attorney positions pursuant to this RFP. The Defense Attorney will represent parents in Indian Child Welfare cases and defendants in criminal cases in the Snoqualmie Tribal Court (“Court”), as assigned. Currently, Indian Child Welfare cases constitute the bulk of the case load. The Tribe anticipates that the workload will require, on average, approximately 5-20 hours of legal services per month, although this could vary depending on the number and nature of cases being handled at any given time. Nevada Legal Services

Indian Law Program Staff Attorney, Elko, NV.  Nevada Legal Services is a statewide non-profit that provides free legal assistance to low income Nevadans. The Indian Law Program is based out of our Reno office and serves the 27 Native American tribes and colonies within the State of Nevada. The Program provides a wide range of services to both tribal members and tribal governments based upon the needs expressed by each community. In that capacity, the Program acts as public defender in a number of tribal jurisdictions and also serves as counsel to the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada. Frequent travel throughout Nevada, including overnight stays, is required.

Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS), a statewide provider of free legal services to low income Indians and Indian tribes, seeks three summer legal interns/externs. One position will be based out of tribal offices in Southwestern Michigan and assist an attorney providing on-site services to tribal members. One intern in the Traverse City office will focus on two tribal domestic violence/human trafficking projects.
