DNA is one of the largest Indian legal service organizations in the country, located in northern AZ, northwest NM, and southern UT.  We serve clients who live in poverty, with their civil legal needs, such as consumer law, domestic violence, guardianships and other family law, landlord/tenant, employment and public benefits cases.  We practice in tribal, state, federal and administrative courts. We have summer law clerk positions (volunteer or Work-Study) available, the internships are 10 weeks long, generally June 1st-August 12th, but we’re flexible.

Contract Legal Aid Attorney Position at Muckleshoot

This is a one-day-a-week position.

The Muckleshoot Tribal Court has an immediate opening for a contract attorney to staff the Court’s free, weekly legal aid clinic. The attorney will provide direct legal services to community members on a wide range of civil matters, including consumer law, family law, federal Indian law, domestic violence, housing, public benefits, employment, health, disability, and elder law. The attorney must be available to handle emergency telephone consultations as well. The attorney may also occasionally represent clients in tribal, state, and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies. The attorney will work closely with the Tribal Court Director and court staff to provide excellent legal services to the community. The application period closes on March 30, 2017.

Qualifications: J.D. from an accredited university and licensed to practice law in Washington State. The attorney will need to become a member of the Muckleshoot Tribal Bar before advising clients. The ideal candidate will hold licenses to practice law in other Tribal courts in Washington State, as the attorney will asked to provide legal advice with regard to those jurisdictions. The attorney should have experience handling the kinds of matters listed above.

The Friends Committee on National Legislation is hiring for a two-year professional fellowship –lobbying on Native American policy in DC.  FCNL is a Quaker group (but you don’t have to be Quaker).   FCNL has been lobbying as allies on Indian issues for decades.  They’re masters at public-interest lobbying.   They’re looking for someone with tribal connections and experience and some professional work experience — this isn’t an internship. This person will be running the Native program.

FCNL is accepting applications until June 1, and the person would start the job in October.

Tribal Court Public Defender, Lower Brule, S.D. The chosen applicant will have a law degree from an ABA accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the bar of any state (South Dakota licensure preferred). Must never have been convicted of a felony. Provides legal counsel and representation to adults accused of criminal offenses and juveniles accused of delinquent acts. Examines evidence and prepares and presents cases for the defense in criminal actions/delinquency actions.   Review police reports. Draft motions, legal memorandums, and other pleadings. Conducts client and witness interviews. File pretrial motions. Identifies appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients and assists with getting clients into treatment. Appear in court on a daily basis. Knowledge of federal Indian law, criminal law, criminal procedure, juvenile law and procedure; and drug court or alternative courts process and procedures. Ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively, recognize, formulate and implement viable case defense theories, investigations and litigation strategies. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized. Work effectively with others. Code writing (such as updating or amending tribal laws). Assist with grant writing. Be a contributing asset to the office and welcome the opportunity to promote justice on the reservation. Other duties as may be assigned by Chief Judge. Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience. Closing Date: Until filled.
