Environmental Law Institute

Beveridge & Diamond Diversity Law Clerk (Summer 2023). Washington, D.C. With generous support from Beveridge & Diamond PC, our summer law clerk program includes a funded position dedicated to students from traditionally underrepresented perspectives, including students from historically marginalized racial groups and/or economically disadvantaged communities. ELI summer law clerks, including the Beveridge & Diamond Diversity Law Clerk, work closely with ELI experts on domestic and international research projects spanning ELI’s full range of program areas. Deputy Tribal Attorney. Rock Hill, SC. Works with other attorneys in the Nation’s Legal Department to provide legal counsel and representation to the General Council, Executive Committee, the Nation’s departments, commissions, boards, and other entities as required to carry out the business of the Tribal Government and achieve the Nation’s overall objectives. Shoshone Bannock Tribes

Assistant Prosecutor. Fort Hall, ID. This position will mainly handle a criminal caseload, but will cover other matters when needed. Attorney. Uncasville, CT. Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes

Entry Level Prosecuting Attorney. Pablo, MT. The primary responsibility for the Entry Level Prosecuting Attorney will be reviewing reports and drafting complaints. This position also includes communicating with federal, state, and local government agencies in regards to Tribal Court matters. California Tribal Families Coalition 

2023 Summer Law Clerk. Sacramento, CA/Remote. The California Tribal Families Coalition (CTFC) is a nonprofit social welfare membership organization that is led by a Board of Directors comprised of elected tribal leaders. The mission of CTFC is to promote the health, safety and welfare of tribal children and families, which are inherent tribal governmental functions and are at the core of tribal sovereignty and tribal governance. CTFC provides an opportunity for summer law clerks with demonstrated interest in Indian law and/or social welfare law and policy. Clerkships will be primarily remote but may include an opportunity to meet in-person in Northern California with the CTFC team. The application deadline is November 6, 2022.

Colorado Legal Services

Executive Director. Boston, MA. Lead and advance the mission of this renowned statewide nonprofit civil legal aid organization. The mission of CLS is to provide meaningful access to high quality, civil legal services in the pursuit of justice for as many low-income persons and members of vulnerable populations throughout Colorado as possible. With an annual budget of approximately $13 million, CLS provides excellent legal service to as many as possible of the almost 1.4 million Coloradans who qualify financially for its services.  Priority is given to those in greatest social and economic need. CLS serves the entirety of the 104,000-square-mile State of Colorado (the eighth largest state geographically in the country) through 13 regional offices. Legislative Services Attorney. Harbor Springs, MI. The primary function of the Legislative Services Attorney is to serve the Tribal Council and provide legal advice in order to promote and protect Tribal Sovereignty, Tribal Self-sufficiency, and Tribal Self-determination. Navajo Nation Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General

Principal Tribal Court Advocate. Window Rock, AZ.  Performs legal work related to representation of the Navajo Nation government, as assigned by the Assistant Attorney General, including legal research, negotiations, legal writing, drafting pleadings, briefs, memoranda, resolutions and other documents for the divisions, departments, or programs assigned. Child Support Enforcement: Present child support enforcement cases before the Office of Hearings and Appeals. Principal Attorney (Water Right Unit). Window Rock, AZ.  Under general direction of the Assistant Attorney General or the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, professionally represents the Nation in multiple water rights adjudications pending in state and federal courts, in state administrative water rights matters and in any settlement negotiations concerning the Nation’s water rights. The Principal Attorney works closely with technical staff within the Water Rights Unit Staff, Department of Water Resources and other programs within the Navajo Nation, and with consultants retained to provide technical support to the Nation or to serve as expert witnesses. The Principal Attorney provides legal advice on all water rights matters to the Office of the President and Vice President, the Office of the Speaker, the Navajo Nation council, and its committees and subcommittees and the Navajo Nation Water Rights commission (NNWRC) to ensure that the water rights of the Navajo Nation are effectively pursued and protected.  This position is open until filled.

Administrative Legal Secretary (Water Rights Unit). The Catawba Indian Nation

Request for Proposals – Tribal Court Bailiff. Rock Hill, SC. Duties include: (1) Screening the public (attorneys, defendants, etc.) at the front door; (2) Removing the public or others if they are in unauthorized areas or are causing a disturbance to the public or employees of the Court and the Tribe; (3) Supervising the loading/unloading and security of prisoners transported to and from Court; (4) Standing watch in open court and assisting as deemed necessary by the In-Court Clerk and sitting Judge; (5) Ensuring the security of the In-Court Clerk, sitting Judge, attorneys, public and defendants as

Request for Proposals – Tribal Court Judge. Rock Hill, SC. The duties include all normal duties of a drug court judge acting in that capacity for infractions and code enforcement cases. The Catawba Nation intends holds court twice a month on first and third Thursdays of the month, and will be proceeded by a meeting between all service providers and staff to make recommendations. Court will be held in a professional manner according to standards observed by the NADCP. The Judge shall maintain all education requirements for the position and comply with all the reporting requirements. The judge may review and make recommendations regarding court programs, court fines, court charges, and court procedures. Summer 2022 Internship. Rock Hill, SC; Remote. The Catawba Nation is seeking candidates for its summer 2022 Legal Internship.Interns will assist the Nation’s Legal Department by researching pertinent issues, attending meetings, and drafting ordinances, memoranda, and policies. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, interns will be asked to work remotely. The California Native American Heritage Commission

Native American Udall Congressional Internship

Even as Native nations achieve greater levels of self-determination, Indian Country continues to be influenced by U.S. federal law and policy. The Udall Internship places students in Senate, House, and federal agency offices to learn firsthand how the U.S. government works with Native nations. Interns will gain a better understanding of the government to government relationship and how they can use this knowledge on behalf of their tribes.

California Tribal Families Coalition

2022 Summer Law Clerk. Candidates are preferably rising 3Ls, however, 2Ls with relevant experience prior to or while in law school will be considered. Principle Attorney, Window Rock, AZ.  Under general direction of the Assistant Attorney General or the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, professionally represents the Nation in multiple water rights adjudications pending in state and federal courts, in state administrative water rights matters and in any settlement negotiations concerning the Nation’s water rights. The Principal Attorney works closely with technical staff within the Water Rights Unit Staff, Department of Water Resources and other programs within the Navajo Nation, and with consultants retained to provide technical support to the Nation or to serve as expert witnesses. Victim and Witness Advocate, Window Rock, AZ.  Under general supervision provides assistance to victims of crime through securing intake assessments, identifying and reviewing/securing referrals for the immediate well being of the victim. Reviews criminal complaints, police reports, and referrals to determine appropriate assistance to the victims. Gathers factual information & historical data, reviews reports, interviews victims and prepares statements, prepare investigation reports, and work closely with prosecutor in the prosecution. Establishes, reviews, and makes referrals specific to the needs of the victim, including shelter, crisis intervention, medical, counseling, and transportation, to guide in recovery/healing. Assist with protective services for victims.
