Identify, Advise, and Support Native Pre-Law Students
Recent scholarship by the American Bar Association establishes that although the total number of Native American law students has steadily increased over the past four decades, legal education in the United States includes very few Native American law students, professors, and/or administrators. It is clear that progress is needed. The Native student population remains well below one percent of the total J.D. enrollment (The Pursuit of Inclusion: An In depth Exploration of the Experiences and Perspectives of Native American Attorneys in the Legal Profession).
Many Native American attorneys report that their decision to pursue legal education was strongly influenced by personal interaction and the persuasion of family, mentors, lawyers, and other professionals. The Pathways to the Legal Profession Conference aims to increase the number of competitive Native law school applicants nationwide by providing mentors necessary skills and resources to identify, advise, and support the next generation of Indigenous attorneys.
Community and Social Network
We invite advisors with an array of titles and responsibilities to attend the conference. This includes community members such as teachers and youth mentors, as well as those who specifically advise American Indian students interested in applying to law school such as educators, school administrators, and pre-law advisors.
This Training Includes…
- Keynote session featuring Indian Law professor, Matthew L.M. Fletcher, outlining the need for Native Attorneys
- Strategies to identify students who possess qualities that may translate to success in law school
- Workshop on applying to law school, covering topics such as advising applicants on their personal statements, resumes, and supplemental statements (including diversity statements and other addenda); financing law school; LSAT Overview; and law school selection
- Panel discussion with current Native law students
- A national network of pre-law advisors to American Indian prospective law school applicant

2019 Native American Pipeline to Law Initiative
From June 26-30, 2019, 34 prospective Native American pre-law applicants from across Indian Country attended the Native American Pipeline to Law Initiative at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, C.A. During this five-day intensive program, students heard from law school admissions professionals, law professors, law students, and more about applying to and attending law school. This year, we were fortunate enough for Olympian Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota) to surprise us!
The Pipeline’s mission is to provide serious preparation for Native law applicants, as well as to connect applicants to the invaluable resources and support they need from professionals. The program even includes an introduction to and support for taking the LSAT. Former participants of this program have gone on to complete PLSI and law school.
The Pipeline to Law Initiative will be held again during the summer of 2020. If you’re interested in providing financial support to this program or have more questions, please contact Kate Rosier.
Pre-Law Workshop in Los Angeles
Apply to the FREE Native Pre-Law Workshop co-hosted by California Indian Law Association and the National Native American Bar Association, June 7-8, 2019 in Los Angeles. Students who complete the workshop will receive an LSAT prep course scholarship, be paired with an attorney mentor, and will be welcomed into the California Indian Law community by receiving complementary registration to the 19th Annual California Indian Law Conference October 3-4, 2019 at Graton Resort and Casino.
Applications are due this Friday, May 3, 2019.
While this program is geared towards current undergraduates, others who are thinking of applying to law school are welcome to apply.

The workshops will assist participants in preparing competitive applications. Come learn how to successfully apply to law school and network with law school professionals.

This is a great opportunity for students to learn about law school, admissions criteria, LSAT prep, and more. Registration is free, food and lodging is provided, as well as a limited number of LSAT Prep courses will be available for participating students. It does not matter what school the student wishes to attend, these sessions are geared to help all students.
