The Nez Perce Tribe Department of Law & Justice is recruiting for: PUBLIC DEFENDER HR-17-180 Applicant must provide evidence of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited college of law, and of active membership in good standing in a State Bar Association and be licensed to practice in Tribal Court. Applicant must have three (3) years documented successful litigation experience as a practicing criminal defense attorney or prosecutor, preferably in a tribal court. Requires verification of successful litigation experience by a letter of recommendation from the immediate supervisor, or by providing contact information from the immediate supervisor for a follow-up reference check. Applicant must demonstrate an understanding of Tribal, federal, and state law and multijurisdictional issues which often arise in litigation in Tribal Court. Excellent legal research and writing skills preferred. Please provide a legal writing sample with application, and resume. This is an exempt position with includes generous health insurance and other benefits. Nez Perce Tribe Seeks Chief Judge

The Nez Perce Tribe Department of Law & Justice is recruiting for: CHIEF JUDGE HR-17-179 full-time regular. This position requires a wide range of legal, administrative, management and budgetary skills. The Chief Judge presides over the Tribal Court, and hears, or assigns to other Tribal Court Associate and Pro-Tem judges, all cases heard in the Tribal Court. The Chief Judge handles all phases of civil and criminal litigation, drafts orders, opinions, memoranda and other legal documents, and fulfills all other duties required of the Chief Judge to assure an effective and fair Tribal Court. In addition, the Chief Judge supervises Associate Judges, Court Administrator and Healing to Wellness Court Coordinator. Requires three (3) years’ experience as a judge, tribal court judicial experience preferred. More than five (5) years of tribal court Chief Judge experience and evidence of success in court administration, court staff supervision and court budget development is preferred. Applicants must demonstrate that they have a thorough knowledge of Indian law, the Nez Perce Tribal Code, and applicable federal law, including but not limited to the Tribal Law and Order Act and Violence Against Women Act. Must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and must be a member in good standing of a state bar. Hopi Tribe

Chief Prosecutor. Responsible for the executive and administrative control of the Tribal Prosecutor’s Office, as well as prosecuting crimes committed within the Hopi Reservation and its boundaries, and prosecuting delinquency and minor child in need of care petitions.

Probation Officer. Manages a case load and enforces court ordered probationary sentences by supervising and monitoring probationers under the direct supervision of the Chief Probation Officer. The incumbent performs paraprofessional duties requiring knowledge and skill in assessments, investigation, counseling, and supervision of probationers.

Deputy General Counsel. Provides professional legal counsel and representation to the Hopi Tribal government – including the legislative and executive branches of the Hopi Tribe, the administrative departments, offices, and programs – as specified by the Tribal Council and the General Council.

Licensed Deputy Prosecutor. Performs professional legal work in prosecuting criminal offense, juvenile offenses, and certain civil cases in the Hopi Tribal Courts, including legal research and preparation of Court documents; response to citizen inquiries relating to tribal court procedures and violations of Tribal laws prosecuted in Tribal Court.

New Mexico Legal Aid

Managing Attorney, Native American Program. New Mexico Legal Aid seeks an experienced attorney with at least 10 years of experience working in Pueblo Indian or other tribal communities to lead our statewide Native American Program.  The Native American Program provides free legal services to low-income people living on or near 19 Pueblo Indian communities in New Mexico, plus outreach services to the Mescalero Apache community. The Managing Attorney should have experience in supervising legal advocacy and cases in Federal, State and Tribal Court.  Candidates must be an NM licensed attorney with at least 5 years of litigation experience, preferably including poverty law issues in Tribal and Federal Indian law cases.

The Managing Attorney will supervise attorneys, paralegals and other staff and volunteers, handle administrative duties, and work in close collaboration with other members of NMLA’s management team. The Managing Attorney also will handle cases as sole counsel or co-counsel. The Managing Attorney will be active in local bar and community activities, and will participate in community education and outreach to eligible clients. The Native American Program handles creative, challenging and complex work. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are passionate and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client communities, including development of effective team strategies to handle complex advocacy and extended representation cases.

Requirements:  Excellent communication, writing and analytical skills, and sensitivity to and ability to work with diverse low-income populations. Self-motivated individuals with strong inter-personal and managerial skills are encouraged to apply. Candidates also must possess the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. Proficiency in Keres or other relevant Native American language is a plus.

Minimum three years as licensed attorney; prior experience in administrative and supervisory roles preferred. Must be willing to travel. In that capacity, the Program acts as public defender in a number of tribal jurisdictions and also serves as counsel to the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada.
