Mohegan Sun Officials Assuage Financial Community

The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority reduces stipends to tribal members when changes like the current economic downturn warrant it, casino officials told the financial community today.

Mohegan Sun also has a stable management team that is continuing to work to improve the product it offers patrons, despite the effects of the recession.

Casino officials made the comments this morning during a Webcast presentation at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2009 credit conference in New York City. Participants in the Webcast included a broad range of members of the financial industry.

The tribe’s Mohegan Sun casino is one “you could put anywhere and it would be a category killer and a market leader,” said Mitchell Etess, the casino’s president and chief executive officer.

Mohegan Sun Expansion to Use Union Labor

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has agreed to use union labor for the $1 billion expansion of the Mohegan Sun Casino.

The tribe and the New London-Norwich Building and Construction Trades Council came to a project labor agreement. It’s the first formal deal of its kind, The Hartford Courant reported. The union has agreed to respect tribal law and sovereignty. The union recently opposed a bill that would have forced tribal casinos to ban smoking wherever liquor is served. The tribe is adding a hotel tower, more gaming space, a House of Blues music hall, shopping, and bars and restaurants to the casino.

New Studies Show Pequot and Mohegan Casinos are Good*

From the Connecticut Economy, a journal published by the University of Connecticut.

The first article, “Spill-Free Gaming,” demonstrated that the operation of the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos had no adverse effect on local crime rates. A second article, “The State of Play in New England Casino Gaming,” argues that the enormous revenues generated by gaming Connecticut means that legalized gambling in Rhode Island and Massachusetts is inevitable. Another article, “Got Game?” demonstrated that these two casinos contribute $430 million a year to the Conn. general fund.
