ICT: 2012 Presidential Candidates Yet to Campaign in Indian Country

Meant to post this last week….

Here. An excerpt:

In 2012, Native Americans across the land are wondering where on Earth—or in America, at least—the outreach has been from the presidential campaigns. For an election that is forecasted to be quite close—closer by the day, according to the most recent polls—in battleground states where Native populations, though comparatively small, could tip the scale. “This will probably be a very close election, and neither campaign should ignore any group of voters, especially one that is reliably supportive,” says Daniel McCool, a political science professor at the University of Utah and co-author of the 2007 book Native Vote: American Indians, the Voting Rights Act, and the Right to Vote.

Obama realized the opportunity early on in 2008, but Indian votes appear to be less important to him this time around. As of June 14, his Chicago camp hadn’t formally named an official Native vote coordinator or hierarchy, while operations to court African-American, Latino, Asian, Jewish, gay, and women voters were already established. His campaign website in 2008 had many Native blog posts and tribal endorsements. This year, nothing yet.

GTB Chairman Derek Bailey Halts Congressional Campaign

From Native News Network:

TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN – In a surprise move to many of his supporters, Chairman Derek Bailey announced today that he is terminating his race to seek the Democratic Party nomination for Michigan’s First Congressional District.

***

Bailey will now enter the race to secure the Democratic nomination for a Michigan House of Representatives seat in District 101. The current state representative is Republican Ray Franz.

The 101st House District includes Leelanau, Benzie, Manistee and Mason counties.

“During my tenure as Tribal Chairman several business and community leaders asked that I seek the congressional seat. Ironically while I was on the campaign trail I heard from many who said I was needed to run in Michigan’s 101st District,”

said Bailey.

Chairman Bailey needed to raise significantly more money than he was able to–he was also running against a popular former state representative in the primary, Gary McDowell, which significantly limited his support (both in votes and money) from other Democrats. According to the article, the latest cash-on-hand reports showed the Chairman with $78K and McDowell with $503K.

Embarrassing Michigan Senate Candidate Takes Down Racist Campaign Ad

From IPR:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra is altering his ad strategy following a storm of criticism over a spot deemed by many as insulting to Asians. The Hoekstra campaign is rotating a new TV ad into a statewide media purchase that will air instead.

The first ad immediately became the target of criticism, nationwide attention and jokes. It depicts a young Chinese woman speaking in broken English.

The Hoekstra campaign also pulled down a website associated with the China ad.

The attention generated by the controversy convinced one of Hoekstra’s rivals for the Republican nomination to move up the timing of his first ad buy.

“It demeans people. It misleads people,” says rival Clark Durant. “What Pete does is take a Chinese-American and  then mocks the whole process. It drips in cynicism, and that’s what people are so sick and tired of.”

GTB Chairman Bailey to Run for Congress

Here.

An excerpt:

Peshawbestown, Mich.— The campaign to represent northern Michigan’s 1st Congressional District is expected to gain a new candidate this weekend.

Derek Bailey, tribal chairman of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, will announce his intention Saturday to run for Congress. He would face ex-state Rep. Gary McDowell of Rudyard in the Democratic August primary. McDowell lost in November to Republican Dr. Dan Benishek of Crystal Falls in a heated race for the seat held by longtime U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee.

The 1st District is shaping up to be Michigan’s most hotly contested election and one with national implications. Democrats are targeting it as one of 25 they can win back in 2012 to retake the House.

Bailey, 38, was elected in 2008 as the youngest chairman of the tribe, a sovereign nation that was federally recognized in 1980.

In 1984, the tribe of more than 4,000 citizens became one of the first in the state to open a casino, the Leelanau Sands Casino. The Turtle Creek Casino and the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa followed.
