For anyone who’s interested, my article, “‘Hostile Indian Tribes . . . Outlaws, Wolves, . . . Bears . . . Grizzlies and Things Like That?’ How the Second Amendment and Supreme Court Precedent Target Tribal Self-Defense,” recently came out in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law and is now available on Westlaw and Lexis. It examines the legal history of tribes’ and Indians’ right to self-defense (or lack thereof) and right to bear arms and argues that tribes are still being punished for past acts of self-defense.
The standards will become effective once they receive EPA approval. The State’s press release reports that they were developed in collaboration with tribes and others and that they are designed to be protective of those, including tribal members, who consume large amounts of fish. The National Center of American Indian Enterprise Development will be honoring Swinomish Chairman Brian Cladoobsy with its American Indian Tribal Leadership Award at its annual economic summit and trade fair in Las Vegas. Others honored include David Melton, Clara Pratte, Kurt Luger, U.S. Senator Max Baucus, Kathy Meyer, Karen Jensen, and several entities. The summit and trade fair takes place today through March 17.
