Environmental Law Institute

Fall Research and Publications Intern (August-December), Washington, D.C. and remotely. Interns conduct in-depth secondary and primary research, attend and report on outside events, analyze, edit, and synthesize scholarly material, assist with preparation for environmental training courses, and provide limited administrative support. ELI integrates interns into the day-to-day operations of the Institute, and interns are encouraged to attend ELI-sponsored workshops, seminars, roundtable, and other events. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife i

Attorney I, Office of the General Counsel, Sacramento, CA. The Department is the state trustee agency for fish and wildlife, managing these resources for their ecological and public use values. This Attorney I position is appropriate for newer attorneys interested in state service and a collaborative office environment. The position will work closely with CDFW’s team of environmental scientists implementing the Water Storage Investment Program adopted by the voters as part of Proposition 1 in 2014. This will include negotiation of contract and grant terms, research regarding contracting and granting legal requirements, legal review to ensure that Water Storage Investment Program projects meet regulatory requirements, and preparation of other contract and grant-related legal documents. Earthjustice

Staff Attorney, Northwest. The Northwest Office opened in 1987 to enable Earthjustice to take a more active role in preserving the unique natural resources and environment of the Pacific Northwest.  Since that time, the Northwest office has undertaken campaigns to protect old growth forests, promote salmon recovery, improve water quality, protect Puget Sound and the Salish Sea and the communities that depend on them, stop coal-fired power plants, prevent the Pacific Northwest from becoming a fossil fuel fossil fuel export hub, and protect farmworkers and communities from toxic pesticides, among other things.  We are building out southern resident orca recovery work and partnerships with environmental justice communities in Seattle and Portland.  We frequently work in close partnership with Native American Tribes and fence-line communities.  The new Staff Attorney would spend a significant portion of his or her time partnering with environmental justice communities, along with other Northwest attorneys.

Staff Attorney, AK. The Alaska office works to protect Alaska’s public lands and waters, fish and wildlife, air and water quality, and public health from threats posed by oil and gas development, old growth logging, minerals and coal mining, industrial-scale ocean trawling, and other activities. We represent conservation groups, Alaska Native tribal and nonprofit organizations, community groups, fishing organizations, and others in litigation and other advocacy before federal and state agencies and in the courts.  With offices in Juneau and Anchorage, we work on issues throughout the state.  Our current priorities include protecting America’s Arctic from oil and gas development, roadless area and old growth forest protection on the Tongass National Forest, and opposition to several proposed large-scale mines in western and southeast Alaska and on transboundary rivers in Canada.  For more information about the Alaska office, please visit here.
