Here’s an interesting article about a family’s attempt to develop a casino on an allotment they own off-reservation in Bremerton, Washington. The allotment was originally issued to a Quinault tribal member but her descendants, who currently own it, are Samish.

Information Request on Tribal Gun Laws
I’m beginning research on tribal gun laws. If you would like to help, please email any information you have on tribal laws regulating guns or protecting gun rights, such as a copy of the law or information on legislative history, to me at tribalgunrights@comcast.net. I’m particularly interested in efforts to curb gun violence through regulation, especially laws enacted in response to mass shootings, and also in whether any tribes have stand-your-ground laws. But all tribal laws pertaining to guns are of interest to me. You can find my earlier work on tribes and the Second Amendment here.

DOJ to consult with tribes on possible voting rights legislation
The DOJ is considering recommending that Congress pass legislation requiring state and local election administrators whose districts include Indian or Alaska Native lands to allow tribes to designate at least one polling place. Consultations are to begin shortly. It seems to me that such legislation would be very helpful in reducing the barriers to voting for Native persons who live on reservations and in similar communities.
The official notice is here: DOJ Consultation Announcement–Voting Rights (1). More information can also be found on the website for the Office of Tribal Justice.

How “Yooper” made it into Merriam Webster
Okay, so this story has a legal angle but not an Indian law angle (that I know of), but I couldn’t resist posting it anyway. As I found out from reading the Merriam Webster blog (here), the word “Yooper” was added to the dictionary after a lengthy campaign by a prosecuting attorney in Delta County, Michigan. Personally, I have yet to make it to the U.P., but it’s on my list.
