NCAI Summer 2018 Legal Internship – Domestic Violence

NCAI is hiring a summer intern to assist us in our work concerning domestic violence in Indian Country. Students must have completed at least one year of law school by the start of the internship. Intern applicants must be able to serve a minimum of 16 hours per week, for a minimum of six weeks. The internship is based in our Washington, DC office. Internships are unpaid, but many schools will offer college credit or financial assistance, and some tribes may be willing to sponsor NCAI interns from their tribe. NCAI will be glad to provide information to your school or tribe to assist in securing credit or financial support for your internship.

The intern will work directly with a team of NCAI staff to plan and coordinate NCAI’s outreach and advocacy work concerning Domestic Violence, specifically NCAI’s projects on VAWA 2013 expanded criminal jurisdiction and on mapping domestic violence resources throughout Indian Country. Responsibilities include legal research, drafting legal memos, helping organize the summer 2018 meeting of the Inter-Tribal Working Group, helping assess gaps in domestic violence services, and organizing webinars on legal topics.

Nez Perce Tribe

Hanford Project Legal Policy Analyst, Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Program, Lapwai I.D. The ERWM program’s role is to protect the Tribe’s treaty-reserved right at the Hanford Site in the state of Washington, regulate air quality on the Tribe’s Reservation in the state of Idaho, and oversee emergency response planning on the Reservation. The ideal candidate will be a team player; will have sound judgement, accompanied by excellent research, writing, and communication skills; the ability to analyze complex factual, legal, and policy issues; the ability to delve deeply into environmental strategies and projects related to the Tribe’s interests at the Hanford Site; and the ability to respond to a wide array of environmental issues that require prompt and accurate analysis. The Tribe offers an attractive compensation package, including: medical and life insurance, a matching 401(k) contribution, and a generous leave policy. Applicants must have relevant experience with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school. Cultural Sovereignty Fellowship, Rockville, M.D. The Cultural Sovereignty Fellowship is a one-year fellowship position. AAIA is seeking recent graduates of undergraduate, graduate or law degree programs; the applicant must have or will graduate between January 2016 and June 2018. The Cultural Sovereignty Fellow will support the development of national policy in Indian affairs, and provide research, analysis and writing to support programs that include youth education, juvenile justice issues, sacred site protection, repatriation and protection of cultural heritage. Request for Proposal: IGRA and AZ Tribal State Gaming Compact (Hopi Tribe)

The Hopi Tribe is accepting requests for a Contract to provide legal services to Hopi Tribe in connection with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, matters under the Arizona Tribal State Gaming Compact and applicable Hopi Tribe laws and policies. The Contractor will work on amendments, negotiations and implementations of the Compact relative to transfer agreements and/or gaming facilities. The Clerk of the Court is responsible for the administration and management of Northern California Intertribal Court System’s (NCICS) criminal and civil docket, including, but not limited to, matters referred to mediation or arbitration. The Court Clerk is also the initial point of contact for public inquiries regarding the Northern California Intertribal Court System, and is responsible for other duties assigned by the Court Operations Manager.

The Northern California Intertribal Court System (NCICS) Tribal Court Operations Manager is responsible for the administration of tribal court operations, programs, and services. The Tribal Court Operations Manager works closely with tribal leaders of the NCICS Judicial Council, Judges, tribal attorneys, court clerks, probation officers, tribal advocates, and county Judges and court administrators. The Tribal Court Operations Manager supervises and manages all daily operations of the NCICS including but not limited to, preparing the court budget, maintaining court security, overseeing court reports, managing public information, and maintaining records. The Tribal Court Operations Manager is also responsible for the supervision and management of all court staff. The Tribal Court Operations Manager reports to and is directed by the Chair of the Judicial Council and the NCICS’ governing body – a Judicial Council appointed by the governing bodies of the four consortium Tribes.
