2018 Summer Legal Intern, Manistee, M.I. Assists the Unified Legal Department in its role as in-house legal counsel to the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. The position is paid at a rate of $15.00-$17.50 per hour, depending on experience. The National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) and its collaborative
partners will host the American Indian Justice Conference (AIJC) on the Agua Caliente
Reservation in Southern California on December 7-8, 2017.

The goal of the AIJC is to provide training to enhance your tribal community’s response to
combat alcohol and drug abuse, recognize how trauma impacts drug and alcohol abuse in
tribal communities, and identify current trends and best practices for tribal justice systems to strengthen multi-disciplinary approaches to healing and justice. The five multi-disciplinary tracks include alcohol and substance abuse, tribal justice strategic planning, tribal courts, tribal security and probation, and tribal youth.

CTAS Purpose Area 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9 grantees may use grant funds to attend the
AIJC. Please confirm with your Program Manager that you have adequate travel and
training funds remaining in your award.

The conference is pending final approval by the Department of Justice. Do not make any non-refundable reservations until final approval from the DOJ has been confirmed.

Senate Indian Affairs Committee

Spring 2018 Law Clerk, Washington, D.C. The Democratic staff of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is offering an unpaid legal clerkship to a current law student or recent law graduate for the Spring of 2018.  The law clerk will be responsible for performing legal research, preparing memoranda for professional staff, participating in preparation for hearings, and composing a variety of written materials.  Law Clerks must be able to write quickly and clearly, be flexible in adjusting to changing circumstances and legislative priorities, and be self-starters capable of taking responsibility for ongoing projects.  Applicants should have an interest in Federal Indian Law.  The clerkship provides an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge on how a Senate Committee works to pass legislation and conducts oversight on federal agencies, programs and policy implementation. Full-time applicants preferred; part-time applicants welcome.  Interested applicants should apply by emailing a cover letter indicating availability (start date and hours per week), a resume, and brief writing sample to resumes@indian.senate.gov. In November of odd years, the Board of Trustees is elected and takes office by early December for a 2-year term.
