Invitation to Connecting with Lawyers Networking Reception on January 28, 2016

Happy New Year! We want to personally invite you and your colleagues to MSU COL’s Connecting with Lawyers Networking Reception on Thursday, January 28, 2016, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Come connect with current students and recent graduates. In addition to connecting with our students, you will have the opportunity to meet judges and other members of the bar. During the program, we will highlight different practice areas and geographic locations, and have giveaways every half hour. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

Founded in 1970, the Native American Rights Fund (“NARF”) is the oldest and largest nonprofit law firm dedicated to asserting and defending the rights of Indian tribes, organizations, and individuals nationwide. NARF’s practice is concentrated in five key areas: the preservation of tribal existence; the protection of tribal natural resources; the promotion of Native American human rights; the accountability of governments to Native Americans; and the development of Indian law and educating the public about Indian rights, laws, and issues.

Summer Clerkships
NARF is currently seeking candidates for its Summer 2016 Clerkships! Each year, NARF conducts a nation-wide search for law students to participate in its Law Clerk Program. Positions are available in all three of NARF’s offices: Anchorage, AK; Boulder, CO; and Washington, D.C.

Congrats to South Dakota NALSA!

USD NALSA was presented with the National Native American Law Student Association’s Chapter of the Year award this year at the Federal Bar Association’s 40th Annual Indian Law Conference! Also, Tsyoslake House received the 2L of the year award! NALSA would like to say thank you to all who voted and thank you to all of our members who worked hard to make good things happen in Indian Country! Our goal this year was to bring awareness of current issues that Indian people face, while trying to be positive role models for Indian youth. NALSA would like to say thank you again for this recognition on a national level. Our chapter will continue to strive and work hard for Indian Country! Good work to all the NALSA members who volunteered their time to help better Indian Country!

Montana NALSA Law Week — April 13-17, 2015

Missoula, MT — The Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) at the University of Montana School of Law will be hosting its annual Indian Law Week, April 13-17. This year’s theme is Law, Culture and the Environment. NALSA will host lunch and bring in speakers to discuss a variety of topics impacting tribal communities, such as natural resource extraction, the Columbia River Treaty, and environmental regulations. These sessions are April 13, 14, 15 & 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in UM Law School room 101. They are free and open to the public.

On April 16, Continuing Legal Education will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Downtown, co-sponsored by the Montana State Bar’s Indian Law Section.  Featured speakers are Kimberly Varilek from the EPA’s Region 8 Office of General Counsel, David House, Carrie Le Seur, Kenneth Pitt, and Matthew McKinney. Cost for the CLE is $100 for attorneys, $70 for Indian Law Section members and $50 for non-attorneys.

A reception, silent auction and presentation of the Mi-Ha-Ka-Ta-Kis (Ray Cross) Award will follow the CLE April 16 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10 for the general public or $5 for students.
