The Indian Law Section has extended the deadline for article proposals to be included in the 2022 special Indian Law edition of the Arizona Attorney magazine. Proposals should focus on an issue of interest to those who practice Indian Law in Arizona. Publication in the Indian Law Edition of the Arizona Attorney magazine is a wonderful opportunity for Indian legal practitioners to showcase their expertise in the field of Indian law.  The Indian Law Section relies on you to contribute articles in order to preserve this outstanding tradition.

Either a short or a long article may be proposed. Generally, a long article will be between 2,000 and 2,500 words (in a Microsoft Word document, about 9 to 12 pages including endnotes) and will be about 3 to 4 pages in the magazine. A short article will be approximately 1,500 words and typically will be 2 pages in the magazine.

The proposal should provide the following information: author’s name and contact information (e-mail address, phone number, and name of employer/firm); the subject matter of the article relevant to the practice of Indian law in Arizona (e.g., ICWA, NAGPRA, Water Rights, Land Use, Tribal Sovereignty, etc.); the anticipated title; and a concise summary of the thesis of the article. 

Proposal authors will be notified on whether their proposed article has been accepted by February 11, 2022.  The draft of the article for a selected proposal will be due on March 18, 2022.  Final drafts of selected articles are due by April 25, 2022.

The Catawba Nation

OST Marijuana Commissioner and AlternatesThe Oglala Sioux Tribal Council is now accepting Letters of Intent for persons who are interested in serving as an (1) COMMISSIONER AND (1) ALTERNATE for the OST Marijuana Commission. Beverly Clark (Aamjiwnaang First Nation, Sarnia Reserve).
Mary 21, 1939 – February 16, 2013.
Beverly received her BA in 1961 and her MA in 1963 from the University of Michigan. Prior to entering into the practice of law, Beverly was a public school teacher. She received her JD from Wayne State University in 1972. Her law practice focused on family law in the Detroit area. In 1983, Beverly became the first woman President of the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association (now known as the Michigan Association for Justice). She served on the Detroit Human Relations Commission as a Chair and Vice-Chair. She was the first Native American Commissioner for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and served between 1982 and 1991. She was the 2006 awardee of the American Indian Law Section’s Tecumseh Peacekeeping Award and served on the Board for Michigan Indian Legal Services.

Lynnmarie Johnson (Saginaw Chippewa descendant).
December 15, 1960 – July 21, 2015.
Lynnmarie was born in Flint, Michigan and was a resident of the Flint area all of her life. On February 23, 1980 she married Michael Bryan Johnson. Lynnmarie received her BBA from the University of Michigan in 1991, after receiving her AA, with honors, in 1989 from Mott Community College. Lynnmarie graduated from University of Michigan Law School in 1994. Not only was she a licensed attorney, she was also a certified public accountant. Her law practice had a focus on Bankruptcy and Estate Planning. She was a past Chair of the American Indian Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and a board member for both Michigan Indian Legal Services and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan.

The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council is now accepting Letters of Intent for persons who are interested in serving as an (1) COMMISSIONER AND (1) ALTERNATE for the OST Marijuana Commission (“Commission”). The Commission is a three member commission appointed by the Tribal Council and are seeking ALTERNATE commissioners should a vacancy occur. Senior Director – Judicial and National Engagement (Attorney). Remote. The Senior Director of Judicial and National Engagement brings national expertise in key areas of access to justice, dependency court legal practice, and the development of partnerships and collaborations that will support judicial branch improvements and promote the social determinants of health and prevention. This position will promote effective practice strategies and support to national efforts to create communities of practice that advance judicial branch and national engagement strategies that will strengthen child, family and community well-being. JUDGES NEEDED FOR NATIONAL NALSA MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Colorado Law is hosting the 30th Annual National NALSA Moot Court
Competition on February 26-27th, 2022, virtually via Zoom. Law students from
across the country will take on the challenge of writing and arguing the most
compelling federal Indian law and tribal governance issues. Teams of two students
will write an appellate brief and give oral arguments addressing the same legal
problem using their own unique legal theories.

We are in need of Oral Argument Judges to sit on a panel of three and
individually score competitors via Zoom. Each Judge can determine the number of
rounds they participate in based on their availability. Please see our website rules

Environmental Justice Clinical Fellow. Stanford, CA.
