American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

Staff Attorney, Racial Justice Program, New York City, N.Y. The Racial Justice Program is seeking a full-time attorney to handle Indian Rights cases, along with other racial justice cases, in its National Office in New York City. A J.D. is required, eligibility to be admitted to the New York Bar within one year of hire, and a minimum of five years of experience is strongly preferred. Indigenous Justice Legal Fellow, Missoula, M.T. Reporting to the Legal Director, the IJ Legal Fellow will work with Indigenous communities throughout Montana and provide litigation support based on community initiative and demand. The ACLU-MT works on a variety of issues that impact Indigenous people – including tribal sovereignty, voting rights, education equity and school discipline, discrimination in employment and housing, and the criminalization of poverty. Over the past two years we have worked to build Indigenous Justice into every aspect of our organization through building relationships with Indigenous leaders and community members and prioritizing issues identified by Indigenous communities. We have increased our organizing presence in Indigenous communities throughout the state, and are now ready to expand the program by hiring a Legal Fellow committed to supporting Indigenous Justice. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. This position is designed to help attorneys in the early stages of their careers develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various phases of Indigenous Justice litigation. Cowlitz Indian Tribe

Staff Attorney, Longview & Ridgefield, W.A. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe is seeking a Staff Attorney to work in the Cowlitz Legal Department. The Staff Attorney is responsible for preparing and analyzing contracts, legal documents, and the Tribal Constitution, codes, and ordinances. The Staff Attorney will be the Prosecutor for the Cowlitz Tribal Court in criminal and civil actions for Tribal issues on the Cowlitz Indian Reservation areas. The Staff Attorney will report directly to and assist the General Counsel with issues and activities concerning tribal legal rights, obligations, and privileges. Yavapai-Apache Nation

Chief Judge, Camp Verde, A.Z. The Yavapai-Apache Nation is seeking a Chief Judge to serve a two-year term. The Chief Judge presides over and ensures the proper operation of the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Court. National Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

Climate and Clean Energy Legal Fellow, Washington, D.C. NRDC is seeking an Attorney to serve as a Climate and Clean Energy Legal Fellow. This two-year fellowship is available starting immediately. The Fellow will focus on the administrative processes and expected litigation over agency actions to weaken climate, clean air, and clean energy standards, such as standards for power plants, vehicles, and other industries. Assistant United States Attorney, Phoenix, A.Z. The United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), District of Arizona, is seeking an experienced defensive Civil attorney to serve as a Civil Assistant United States Attorney in the Phoenix, Arizona office. The work of the Civil Division mirrors the varied activities of the federal government and offers a challenging and diverse caseload. Phoenix Civil Division AUSAs handle affirmative and defensive civil cases at both the trial and appellate level. Defensive matters include, employment discrimination claims, Bivens suits filed against federal employees, tort suits brought under the Federal Torts Claims Act, immigration, bankruptcy, land dispute matters, and prisoner litigation, among others. Assistant United States Attorney, Portland, O.R. This position is located in the Civil Division. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) located in the Civil Division of our Portland office will be responsible for representing the United States and its departments, agencies, and employees in civil actions brought against the United States at both the trial and appellate levels. Program Manager, Washington D.C. This position serves as the Director, Office of Indian Education (OIE), Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE). The OIE administers the Indian Education Program, Title VI, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The office executes program requirements and provides technical assistance for supporting local education agencies, Indian tribes and organizations, post-secondary institutions and other entities in meeting the unique educational and culturally relevant academic needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Formula grants are provided to school districts and tribal schools for the purpose of meeting the unique educational needs of Indian students. Nez Perce Tribe

The Nez Perce Tribe (Tribe) Environmental Restoration and Waste Management (ERWM) program is recruiting for:  HANFORD PROJECT LEGAL POLICY ANALYST HR-18-107  Located at Lapwai, ID.  The ERWM programs’ role is to protect the Tribe’s treaty-reserved right at the Hanford Site in the state of Washington, regulate air quality on the Tribe’s Reservation in the state of Idaho, and oversee emergency response planning on the Reservation. The ideal candidate will be a team player; will have sound judgement, accompanied by excellent research, writing, and communications skills; the ability to analyze complex factual, legal, and policy issues; the ability to delve deeply into environmental strategies and projects related to the Tribe’s interests at the Hanford Site; and the ability to respond to a wide array of environmental issues that require prompt and accurate analysis.

The Division of Indian Affairs provides legal counsel and representation to the Secretary acting as federal trustee to American Indian tribes and their members. The division also provides legal advice to the Office of the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Bureau of Indian Education concerning the administration of Indian services and programs. The Branch of Tribal Government Services handles legal issues relating to acknowledgement and federal recognition, education, jurisdiction, Native Hawaiian, international, hunting and fishing, Indian Child Welfare Act, Johnson O’Malley Act, tribal government disputes, tribal constitutions, tribal ordinances, and Section 17 Corporations.
